The first DeepMind Graduate Scholarships in Africa will come to Stellenbosch University.

About the award: Artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise will be enhanced on the African continent through prestigious scholarships to be awarded for postgraduate studies in the fields of applied mathematics, statistics, electrical and electronic engineering, and information technology at Stellenbosch. University (SU).
SU is the first African university to receive these scholarships from DeepMind, a London-based global leader in artificial intelligence research in the real world. Founded in London in 2010, DeepMind Fellowships are part of a wider initiative by the company to expand participation in science and support the wider research ecosystem, including in Africa.
Five scholarships will go to UB students who wish to obtain a two-year master’s degree in applied mathematics or computer science or an MSc in electrical and electronic engineering. Three more scholarships will go to University of Buffalo students who are admitted to PhD studies in applied mathematics, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, mathematical statistics, or statistics.
These scholarships will be available to students from all over sub-Saharan Africa who wish to conduct research related to machine learning, and recipients will be selected by the university to start their courses in 2021. The DeepMind Scholarships Program provides talented students from groups that are currently underrepresented in machines. The learning, including women, is the support they need to study at top universities. Fees are fully paid and recipients receive guidance and support from DeepMind mentors.

The scholarships are open to anyone from Africa. Preference will be given to applicants from groups across the continent who are underrepresented in the global machine learning landscape. Selected applicants can be invited for online interviews.
The scholarships awarded will be conditional on formal admission to full-time graduate study at the University of Stellenbosch, with the accreditation of a research topic focused on machine learning by the scholarship committee.
